Marlon’s swansong.

10 June, 2008

I know this wasn’t his last performance, but for my money, Last Tango in Paris is the last film where Brando was truly brilliant. He hated every minute of making this film, but unlike some of this future projects, he didn’t phone it in. He still exposed his soul on the screen. As a result, this may be his best performance next to Terry Malloy in On The Waterfront.

Then there’s the wonderful last tango itself. Two anonymous lovers revive their fading animalistic passion for one beautiful moment while all the other fools continue dancing like perfect machines. What a wonderful piece of cinema.
