The end of film criticism as we know it.

22 July, 2008

It’s no longer news that Richard Roeper is leaving At The Movies. It’s also no longer news that Roger Ebert is never coming back. According to this link, these are their replacements.

Ben Mankiewicz is ok. He’s no Robert Osborne but he’s a solid personality on TCM. But Ben Lyons!? Ben fffffucking Lyons!?!?!? What does this little E! News schmuck know about movies? There are no critics whose opinions I think are the Gospel but at least personalities like Roger Ebert, A.O. Scott, David Ansen, or Elvis Mitchell — all of whom work well on television — know and understand the medium. Film is art. Art needs historians. And the new breed of critics are no historians.

This year’s best film as reported by At The Movies: The Incredible Hulk. Woo-fucking-hoo.
