Nobody Knows Anything: Episode One.

18 August, 2008

After yesterday’s entry about Rocknrolla being “too English,” I’ve decided to start a series of entries about the state of Hollywood, each applicable to William Goldman’s line, “Nobody knows anything.” And we kick off with an update on the forthcoming Terry Gilliam film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Apparently the fact that it stars Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell isn’t enough for the Hollywood drones.

“In this market, unless I have a reason to think a movie like this is going to be a slam dunk I’m not going to take a flyer on it, even with Heath Ledger,” one distribution executive told the Reporter. Another industry “insider” commented: “For all the elements in this film, it is a Terry Gilliam picture, and as much as you want a movie of his to be good, you have to be careful.”

Yes, it’s true that he hasn’t had a hit film in a while, but whose fault is that? When your last film is only out for one weekend as part of an exclusive engagement in only one city in the country, you can’t really blame yourself for it flopping, can you? Once again the blood-sucking Hollywood crooks would rather watch this picture fail just because it’s a Terry Gilliam film and can’t possibly be worth being Heath’s swansong.
